It’s no secret that the private label business is booming. According to research conducted by Nielsen, 70% of U.S households agree that private label products are a good alternative to named brand products. These stats are all the more impressive considering that the Great Depression was almost a decade ago, so people are not only thinking about affordability when shopping but also quality.

Even so, don’t expect to instantly make millions as soon as you plunge into the private labelling industry; at least not right away. You have to focus on making sure your product sells. Already on Amazon? Good. The FBA (Fulfillment by Amazon) program will take care of backend operations like storage and shipping, freeing you to focus on marketing your product. Here are some tips to help you do just that.

  1. Quickly stack up positive reviews.

To any online trading platform, the importance of reviews is monumental, and Amazon is no exception. Practically no one buys anything online without sufficient ‘social proof’ of their authenticity as well as quality, and that’s exactly what your reviews should portray. That said, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that 88% of consumers trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations.

Go above and beyond to amass a good number of positive reviews. Ask friends and acquaintances that like your product to give reviews. For a new product, even consider giving away a number of them for free in exchange for reviews, as this will also generate good will that is very beneficial in the long run. However, negative reviews hurt your profile so try to get them out of the way with offsite marketing and use such reviews to streamline your product before launch. Don’t forget about your competitors; check out their negative reviews for ideas to surpass them

  1. Increase your Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Never forget that whatever else, Amazon is also a search engine. People actively search for products and the results are listed in a specified order. With over 183 million unique visitors each month at Amazon all searching, you’ve got to ensure your product is among the top of that list. Think hard about what keywords potential customers would use when searching for your product and incorporate them into your product listing. Also, research on Amazon’s SEO factors; things like title, description, material, color and so on. Amazon allows a maximum of 500 characters for the product title so include as many keywords as possible. Don’t despair though, tools like the Keyword Tool Dominator exist to help you find popular long tail keywords.

  1. Take professional photos.

Sounds simple right? Nonetheless, it’s very easy to underestimate the impact that pictures of your product has on sales. The visual appeal that your photos exude at a glance will help determine whether or not a customer will click on your product listing. Photos with great lighting and multiple shots from various angles help give your product a professional air that could go a long way in engendering trust of potential buyers. Additionally, such photos could increase your product ranking on Amazon. If your competition is not taking full advantage of photos then you’ll stand out no matter the rank of your product listing. Take heart, you don’t have to break out a full set of professional equipment, just use a high-end smartphone with a portable lighting studio and you’ll be good to go. For products needing a demonstration of how to use them, taking an instructive video is the way to go for the best results.

  1. Price your product just right.

The pricing of your product is a major factor of how it will appeal to customers. Keep in mind that the main appeal of private label product is affordability over their name brand counterparts. However, don’t go overboard. Many traders on Amazon are finding this out the hard way after racking up serious losses trying to make their product as cheap as possible.

Furthermore, overly cheap products are viewed with some suspicion since customers always expect a catch or doubt its quality. Ensure your product is cheaper than the name brand but not cheap enough to cost you profit. Check out ‘Three Tips For Pricing Your Product’ by Kit Hickey at the Forbes website for some tips on pricing.

  1. Offer well thought-out discounts.

Offering discounts is all well and good but do it carelessly, and you’ll end up appearing desperate to your potential customers. A good practice is aligning your discount pricing to an event or a holiday to give it legitimacy. Every month has at least one minor calendar event so take full advantage of that to please your customers. When you are just starting out, try offering a limited discount promotion to entice buyers. The time limit will put pressure on your customers to take advantage of the discount while it lasts and increase your sales. You can then resume your normal pricing once the promotion is over without any misunderstanding.

  1. Try out bundling

When selling private label products on Amazon, the reality is that you probably have competitors offering the exact same thing. Knowing this, you have to figure out a way to make what you offer more unique. An easy way to do this is to create a product bundle.

It’s quite simple really, you could just group your products into a 3 in 1 pack and list it under a separate product listing. If you’re lucky, this can create an entirely unique product that will instantly earn you the coveted Buy Box placement without having to compete at all! Furthermore, such grouping of items will make your product pretty attractive, guaranteeing substantial sales.

  1. Do some advertising.

Amazon offers Sponsored Products, an amazing advertising service that could do wonders for your business. This service allows your product to be displayed in an Ad at the top of the results page whenever a potential customer conducts a relevant search. This is a great tool to get your product in front of as many people as possible and create awareness of your product. With Amazon offering promotional free credit to get you started and a cost-per-click pricing policy, what are you waiting for? To get the most out of this service, look up ‘10 Pro Tips for Amazon.com Sponsored Search Advertising’ by David Mclean at LinkedIn.

Don’t forget to also do some advertising outside Amazon. Utilize platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest to put your product out there by gathering followers or setting up Ad campaigns.

The battered bandwagon of technologists have fallen on hard times after their exhilarating ride through the borders of economic insanity. The landscape ahead of them is cracked and broken, the road behind, a slagged mess of exploded corporations.

Scouts scour the land ahead, searching for the next frontier. We have passed many oases on the way, causes too soon drained of all sustenance by the greed of the hovering vulture capitalists.

Reports of a shiny mirage in the distance ripple through the ranks of hungry optimists. What does it look like? Where is it exactly? How far are we? Can we get there before the competition? Or will we all end up poorer as a result, just like earlier crusades? The elders caution prudence, pointing to the monuments to the ERP wars, and the catastrophic consequences of the internet revolution.

Is CRM the panacea?

Customer relationship implementations have been plagued so far by the same dismal yields as their Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) cousins. 50% of CRM projects so far have been failures. The reasons sound suspiciously similar to those advanced by consultants with regards to ERP failures. CRM systems are systems that encompass process, people and technological change. Technological change is easily bought, but people and processes tend to be static. What does changing processes really mean? In fact, how do we even begin to change our people without resorting morale destroying tactics like terminations?

Let us first examine the top three uses of CRM systems and speculate further about their applicability in other areas. The first area where CRMs are useful is in the targeting and tailoring of direct advertising. Put simply, we use information of buying patterns to match our customers with focused advertisements in the hope of cutting mailing costs and increasing effectiveness. Another area of application lies in the backend services provided to front-end customer service representatives in calling centres, and stores. The often clumsy implementation of such systems results in absurdities rivaling Kafka’s. We have all had experiences with calling centers where the representatives shuttle us between departments with dismaying frequency and the same questions get asked before the person on the other side says the dreaded “please hold, I will put you to someone who can help”. The last place where CRMs have found use is in accumulating data for endless databases in the hope that someone will come up with a use for them soon.

Commonly used terms are the “80/20 principle”, the “customer lifetime value”, “demand aggregation”, and “customer lock-in”. Why should we even care about our customers? Because the 80/20 rule states that 20% of our customers generate 80% of revenue, thus paying attention to them counts and we want to lock them into a long term relationship.

The buzz on the wire is that a new killer application for CRMs has arrived. We will integrate CRMs (which are our front-end systems) with our ERPs (the back-end systems) to reduce the lags in our procurement systems, improve profitability by moving towards a “real-time” business model. The vision is one of economic utopia. Inventory costs will be next to nil, and the voice of the customer will be heard all the way back in the nether regions of our supply chain. We would maximize the lifetime value of customers by disregarding the opinions of “bad” customers, and listening closely to the needs of our “best” customers. (The definition of “bad” being customers who cost us more to maintain than contribute to our bottom line.) The opportunity cost of options and hedging will go away, leaving pareto-optimality. Unless something unexpected happens which violates our assumptions. Witness the amount of inventory Cisco was stuck with in 2001. The inherent assumption that a well integrated supply chain system could be based on predictive models was broken. Buyers were placing too many advance orders in anticipation of future demand, which never materialized in the wake of the dot.com collapses. The efficiency of the system was based on a greedy algorithm that could not think strategically.

Will CRM be a part of the future? There is no doubt that such systems will be ubiquitous eventually. Will customers really benefit? Only to the extent of their spending, companies will not pander to them unless they are valuable beyond simple measures of profit and loss. But will companies really streamline their processes? That is a question we will have to answer for ourselves within the boundaries of our responsibilities today.

The Design Service Itself

A good developer should demonstrate a desire to educate you to the basics of his job so you understand what you are paying for. Even though you may not care to know this information, the fact that they offer to help you better understand the Internet should speak volumes.  His advice should make sense to you, even when the talk tends to start getting a bit technical. Be sure to question what you don’t understand, and be sure to research the answers you are given.

During your interview process, I think you’ll find that some of us are more comfortable as computer geeks and don’t do a good job of communicating and relating to people.  That could be an unfortunate mistake. Make sure the service you use is competent to communicate thoroughly with you. They also should be flexible and professional enough to coming up with what you want, and not stubbornly stick to what they want, or worse, only what they know.

General Talent

You’re paying for the designer to be creative and come up with a custom graphical template that fits the theme of your business and its content.  The best way to do this is to visit their website to view their portfolio.  In fact, it should be a requirement as, since it is what they do, naturally they should have their own website with work examples. You’d be surprised at how many don’t.

Artistic style is another factor.  For instance, there is a marked difference in graphical style between sites designed by Graphic Memory and those designed by our partner site, Neverest Web Design.  Each of our respective client’s sites show an artistic style unique to how the designer envisions the site should be. A good designer can also put together almost anything the client envisions.  In fact, most designers usually welcome it  when the website owner has a good idea of what they want and can convey it.

Design Criteria

You should look for ease of navigation throughout their sites, graphics should be sharp and professional quality, it should load fast, and the content should get to the point, cover all of the most important points and written to be comprehendible and thorough.

Depending on the site’s purpose, most small business sites should be “designed to market” through the search engines.  A good clue to obtaining a good designer is whether they are talking about designing the site towards this purpose. It will be a major factor to your site’s success.

PHP is a server-side scripting language designed for web development but also used as a general-purpose programming language. PHP is now installed on more than 244 million websites and 2.1 million web servers.[2] Originally created by Rasmus Lerdorf in 1995, the reference implementation of PHP is now produced by The PHP Group. While PHP originally stood for Personal Home Page, it is now said to stand for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor, a recursive acronym.

PHP code is interpreted by a web server with a PHP processor module which generates the resulting web page: PHP commands can be embedded directly into an HTML source document rather than calling an external file to process data. It has also evolved to include a command-line interface capability and can be used in standalone graphical applications.

PHP is free software released under the PHP License, which is incompatible with the GNU General Public License (GPL) due to restrictions on the usage of the term PHP. PHP can be deployed on most web servers and also as a standalone shell on almost every operating system and platform, free of charge.

There are plenty of tutorials available online to learn about PHP. Learning PHP is NOT as overwhelming as it might seem, I promise you.

The best place to start is the PHP manual which is really complete. Click here -> php.net
